How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

If you drive a more recent model, it is likely that your vehicle has an electronic oil monitor that replaces the traditional dipstick. If your vehicle is not equipped with an electronic oil monitor, you will need to check the level manually. Simply follow the steps below:

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground. The engine should be off and it should also be cold.
  2. Pop open the hood to locate the dipstick.
  3. Take the dipstick out and remove any oil from the end of it.
  4. Put the dipstick back into its tube, then take it out once more. Inspect both sides to see where the oil level falls.

If the oil level falls below the proper level indicated on the dipstick, you will need to carefully add more oil until the level is correct. Check your owner’s manual to see what type of oil is recommended for your make and model. Then, remove the oil filler cap and add oil a little at a time.

Why is it Important to Know How to Check Car Oil?

As mentioned above, oil is considered the lifeblood of your vehicle, and it won’t be able to run properly without the correct amount. Your vehicle should receive an oil change at least twice a year, even if the vehicle sits idle, as oil still breaks down over time. An oil change may be required more frequently based on how much you drive in East Aurora.

We recommend checking the oil level on a monthly basis. It is a good way to ensure that there are no leaks in the system. If you notice your car’s hood is hot to the touch or you see steam billowing out from under the hood as you’re driving in West Seneca, you will want to have your vehicle serviced by a professional as soon as possible. This could be a sign that your vehicle is overheating due to an oil leak.
