How Does the GM and Honda Partnership Impact Cadillac?

If you’re up to speed on the latest happenings in the automotive industry, you’ve likely caught wind of the Honda and General Motors joint partnership involving the manufacturing of electric vehicles. The primary goal of this venture is to lower the cost of EVs, making them more accessible to the average driver around the world – and ultimately, transitioning a large portion of the Honda and GM lineup to electric over the next several years.

Clearly, this will have a massive impact on drivers in the Hamburg and East Aurora areas and beyond – from an environmental standpoint and a financial standpoint. Naturally, more EVs mean less damage to our delicate environment. Second, if the trend in EV production and purchase continues, the prices will continuously fall, in addition to the savings on fuel and maintenance. But what impact does this have on Cadillac owners? As a subset of GM, Cadillac will no doubt benefit from the results of this partnership. The most direct impact will be Cadillac’s new lineup of ultra-high-performance EVs, beginning immediately with the new Cadillac LYRIQ.

Several important milestones exist along this timeline. The first is the 2023/2024 retail window, as the first products of this partnership hit the market. Honda’s first full EV, the Prologue, hits the lot in 2024, while Cadillac has already introduced the 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ.

The next significant benchmark comes in 2027 when Honda and GM unveil the brand-new lineup of affordable electric vehicles powered by the new electric battery developed as a result of this partnership. These batteries consist of silicon and lithium and run on the Ultium platform, which creates safer, less expensive EVs.

The final benchmark manifests in 2040 when Honda predicts a 100% emission-free vehicle lineup. It’s still unclear whether GM brands – GMC, Chevy, Buick, and Cadillac – have the same plans to transition to an all-EV lineup. However, they have clearly demonstrated their commitment to significantly reducing their carbon footprint with this new merger.
