What is Cadillac Ultium Battery Technology?

GM Ultium Battery

General Motors has recently announced significant innovations in EV technology that will help the automaker to achieve its goal of launching 30 new electric vehicles by 2025. Specifically, GM’s Cadillac Ultium Platform will help accomplish this goal. What is Cadillac Ultium? The Cadillac Ultium EV battery is lighter and more powerful than the conventional batteries used in electric cars, trucks, & SUVs. Continue reading to learn what the GM Ultium Platform is exactly and how it will make Cadillac EVs, like the new LYRIQ, much more accessible to Hamburg and East Aurora drivers.

What is the GM Ultium Platform?

Ideally, by 2035, the only GM vehicles with an internal combustion engine will be heavy-duty pickups. General Motors’ transition to all-electric cars, trucks, & SUVs has accelerated mainly due to the flexibility of the modular GM Ultium battery and drive unit. This Cadillac Ultium battery can be configured to work in all types of models, not just the 2023 LYRIQ. This new platform can provide more energy density, increased EV range, and lower projected costs of upkeep – all great news for West Seneca drivers trying to find a practical and modestly priced electric vehicle.

What Are the Cadillac Ultium Battery’s Performance Specs?

The GM Ultium Platform is composed of flat, stackable lithium-ion cell pouches. These containers have been designed to boost range, power, and efficiency. The Cadillac Ultium EV battery specs are as follows:

  • The GM Ultium battery options scale from 50 kilowatt-hours to over 200 kWh, which will enable a GM-estimated range of 370 miles or more on a full charge.
  • Ultium EV battery cells feature a state-of-the-art Nickel Cobalt Manganese Aluminum (NCMA) chemistry, designed to reduce the cobalt content by more than 70 percent.
  • Stackable battery pouch cells enable flexible engineering and a more comfortable ride while adding 22 kWh of energy storage.
  • The electronic components of the GM Ultium EV battery are embedded within the modules, which eliminates 80 percent of the battery pack wiring compared to conventional car batteries.
  • Ultium packs are flexible enough to contain multiple combinations of modules to customize energy and range requirements. A Buick, Cadillac, GMC, or Chevy Ultium battery pack can house 6, 8, 10, 12, or up to 24 modules depending on what the vehicle type requires.
